Classic Ross |
Colleen Ross' enigmatic approach to painting women has not only defined her career of 20 years, but it has also made her unique among her contemporaries. Inspired by old romance comic books and 50’s Hollywood, Ross mixes iconic settings with a little Cabaret, some whimsy and A lot of fun. More than painting a pretty face, Ross captures a story on canvas, either of heartache, love, or first encounters. It's through the eyes of Ross’ women...their stories unfold. |

Collage |
Colleen Ross’ collage pieces are created using a mixture of different mediums: hand-dyed and painted papers, acrylics, graphite and inks and then mounted on varying stocks of archival papers. Strongly influenced by Henri Matisse's paper cut-out and gouache works, such as Icarus (1947) and Zulma (1950), Ross has taken this technique to a whole new level, by applying it to her classic women. The resulting group of works is both modern and chic. |

Fauvist Influence |
Fauvism is derived from the French, “Les Fauves”, meaning Wild Beasts. It was an artistic movement of the early 20th century, which included such artists as Matisse, Marquet, Derain and de Vlaminck. The style was described as primitive and shocking; it consisted of bright, highly pigmented colors and wild patterns. The Fauvist influence has always been very central in Ross’ work and in recent years Ross has studied, explored and played with this style in more depth, creating works that are loose, colorful and emotional. |

Pet Portraits |
Colleen Ross is an avid animal lover. Growing up with a cat and dog, who were her first art subjects, Ross developed a love for capturing the silly, sweet and tender animal spirit on paper and canvas. Although she transitioned to painting women, Ross’ love of animals in art has never diminished. In the last few years, responding to interest in pet portraiture, Ross has begun to re-visit her roots. More recently two of Ross’ Pet pieces were featured on the hit ABC television show, Desperate Housewives. |

Motorcycle Pieces |
Colleen Ross has always loved the powerful, curvaceous and sexy shape of the Harley Davidson motorcycle. One of her most notable pieces was that of her portrait of Brooke Shields posing with a Harley, titled “Angel Baby” (Brooke Shields purchased this piece for her home). In 2002, Ross was officially Licensed by Harley Davidson, which is a very rare privilege that has only been bestowed on a few living artists. |
